Hospital Death
If your loved one passes away in hospital they will usually remain there until the appropriate formalities have been concluded. The bereavement office within the hospital will be able to advise you what to do next, depending on the circumstances of the death. Usually if the death was expected, the medical certificate that is required to register the death will be ready quite quickly. If the death was unexpected there is a likelihood the coroner may be consulted. If this happens we suggest contacting us for what to do next. Coroners involvement and procedures differ each time dependent on the circumstances of death.
The bereavement office will email the Medical Cause of Death Certificate directly to the registrar, there is no need for you to visit the hospital to collect the cause of death certificate.
The death does still need to be registered and you are required to attend the register office to do so.
