Hospital Death

If your loved one passes away in hospital they will usually remain there until the appropriate formalities have been concluded. The bereavement office within the hospital will be able to advise you what to do next, depending on the circumstances of the death. Usually if the death was expected, the medical certificate that is required to register the death will be ready quite quickly.  If the death was unexpected there is a likelihood the coroner may be consulted. If this happens we suggest contacting us for what to do next. Coroners involvement and procedures differ each time dependent on the circumstances of death.

Post Covid Registration Process – The bereavement office will email the Medical Cause of Death Certificate directly to the registrar, there is no need for you to visit the hospital to collect the cause of death certificate.

The death does still need to be registered and you are required to attend the register office to do so.

For Birmingham Register Office you will need to complete the online contact form and they will contact you to make an appointment for you to attend the office in person.
The contact form can be found here.

For Solihull Register Office you will need to call the usual number to make an appointment to register the death in person.
The number is 0121 704 8002 or visit their website here.

Ordinarily the registrar will issue a green certificate which will be required by us to enable the funeral to take place. This is issued free of charge.  This form is either emailed directly to us or given to you by the registrar.  On request the registrar will issue copies of the death certificate and for each copy a fee will be charged, currently £11.00. Ordinarily we will not require a copy of the death certificate; however banks, solicitors, insurance companies to name the most common may all require a copy. Give some thought to how many you might need

With registration of the death complete your next step is to contact us so we can meet with you and your family to discuss the funeral arrangements.
